The Cleveland Museum of Art’s Digital Innovation and Technology Services department is seeking a student with an IT or networking background to assist with updating our network monitoring system. Students will learn to use industry-standard network tools to discover, configure, and monitor a wide range of network devices. They will also develop skills in transforming monitoring data into actionable information through the creation of department-specific network dashboards. This experience will provide additional exposure to data center technologies, including networking, internet and WAN connectivity, server hardware, SAN storage systems, virtualization environments, and power and environmental monitoring systems.

Over the course of the , the chosen candidate will gain experience in:

  1. Discovery and classification of all active devices on the network.
  2. Configuration or validation of network monitoring for the following device types:
    1. Network switches, wireless access points, and firewalls.
    2. Network-enabled security cameras and related devices.
    3. Audiovisual equipment and office equipment.
    4. Servers, virtual infrastructure, and key workstations.
    5. Environmental monitoring equipment and uninterruptible power supply (UPS).
  3. Creation of network dashboards or reports using standard network monitoring tools to provide quick visual status of the equipment listed above.
  4. Documentation outlining how to use and interpret the network monitoring system.

This will provide the selected candidate with hands-on experience implementing network monitoring within a large, complex environment that includes a diverse range of devices not typically found in standard business networks or academic labs. Through this work, the student will gain a deeper understanding of the hardware, software, and tools that support modern IT infrastructure. As the project progresses, the student will also strengthen key professional skills, including troubleshooting, time management, and technical communication.

Eligibility Requirements

  • An undergraduate-level student with networking knowledge is required.
  • Prior experience with network switches, firewalls, and access points is .
  • Familiarity with servers, storage, and/or virtualization technology is desirable.

The pay rate for this is $15/hour.

This is 28 hours/week for nine weeks. The will attend weekly meetings with their mentor to review progress and refine the project plan. Additional meetings with other departments will be scheduled as needed. All work will be performed during normal business hours.

The anticipated start date for this is June 1st, 2026.
