POSITION SUMMARY

Seeking a mid-level Configuration Manager / Document Manager to support DOE/NNSA IT infrastructure operations. This role is responsible for establishing, implementing, and maturing configuration management practices across a complex enterprise network environment in alignment with ITIL v4 and modern Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable designing process, enabling automation, and collaborating across engineering, operations, security, and service management teams to improve service reliability, transparency, and operational control.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Configuration Management (ITIL v4)

•    Design, implement, and mature the Configuration Management Practice in alignment with ITIL v4, ensuring configuration information is accurate, reliable, and fit for purpose

•    Define and maintain Configuration Items (CIs) across enterprise network, infrastructure, platform, and application components

•    Establish relationships and dependencies between CIs to support impact analysis, risk assessment, and service reliability

•    Lead the creation, validation, and lifecycle management of configuration data, including baselines and version control

•    Ensure configuration information supports value creation, risk reduction, and improved service outcomes

Tooling & Automation

•    Select, implement, and integrate configuration management and discovery tools (e.g., CMDB, automated discovery, infrastructure-as-code repositories)

•    Automate configuration data collection, reconciliation, and validation to reduce manual effort and improve data quality

•    Integrate configuration tooling with monitoring, incident management, change enablement, and asset management systems

•    Support infrastructure-as-code and declarative configuration approaches where applicable

Site Reliability & Service Management Integration

•    Partner with SRE, network, and platform teams to ensure configuration data supports reliability engineering, availability targets, and operational resilience

•    Enable incident resolution and problem analysis by providing accurate configuration and dependency data

•    Support Change Enablement by ensuring configuration impacts and risks are understood before changes are deployed

•    Contribute to service continuity and disaster recovery planning through accurate configuration baselines

Process Design, Governance & Continuous Improvement

•    Develop policies, procedures, and work instructions aligned with ITIL v4 guiding principles

•    Establish metrics and KPIs to measure configuration accuracy, coverage, and effectiveness

•    Support audits, compliance efforts, and governance reviews by providing authoritative configuration information

•    Act as liaison between engineering, operations, security, architecture, and service management teams

•    Educate stakeholders on configuration management concepts, responsibilities, and value

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must demonstrate the following qualifications.

 

•    3–6 years of experience in site reliability engineering, systems engineering, network operations, or configuration management

•    Hands-on experience designing or operating configuration management processes or CMDB solutions in an enterprise environment

•    Working knowledge of ITIL v4, particularly Configuration Management, Change Enablement, Incident Management, and Continual Improvement

•    Experience with enterprise network and infrastructure environments (on-premises, cloud, or hybrid)

•    Familiarity with automation, scripting, or infrastructure-as-code concepts (e.g., Ansible, Terraform, Git-based workflows)

•    Active Must Have experience with Ansible and Git

•    Strong analytical skills with the ability to model dependencies and assess service impact

•    Active Top Secret clearance

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

•    ITIL v4 Foundation certification

•    Experience integrating configuration management with monitoring, observability, or service management platforms

•    Exposure to SRE concepts such as SLIs, SLOs, error budgets, and reliability engineering

•    Experience supporting regulated or mission-critical environments

•    Knowledge of network configuration management tools and automated discovery solutions

•    Familiarity with Splunk, Ansible, Tenable, or Microsoft enterprise environments

 

TECHNICAL ENVIRONMENT

The selected candidate will operate within the following technology environment: Microsoft, Linux, Splunk, Ansible, Tenable, GEMS. Cloud environments include AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. The environment spans traditional data center (bare metal), cloud, and hybrid cloud architectures.

 

ABOUT THE WORK LOCATION

This position supports the Department of Energy (DOE) Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a federal agency responsible for maintaining and enhancing security through the military application of nuclear science. NNSA operates under the U.S. Department of Energy and maintains a classified IT infrastructure environment requiring strict adherence to federal security protocols, clearance requirements, and operational security standards.

Work will be performed at DOE Headquarters, 1000 Independence Ave SW, Washington, DC 20585. This is a 100% on-site position. No remote or telework options are available.
