Job Title: Data Center Optical Engineer / Field Services Engineer

US ONLY ****

We are seeking a highly motivated Data Center Optical Engineer to support customer data centers and colocation facilities. This role is responsible for ensuring the successful installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of optical transport infrastructure while serving as the primary technical interface between customers and field service teams. The ideal candidate has strong hands-on data center experience, excellent customer communication skills, and the ability to lead technicians while maintaining high standards of quality and operational excellence.

This position requires extensive travel, including the ability to work in non-home market locations for extended periods, potentially up to 100% travel based on business needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and audit field service activities performed within customer data centers and colocation environments.
  • Provide technical oversight and quality assurance for installations, migrations, remediation projects, break/fix activities, and remote hands services.
  • Communicate directly with customers through ticketing systems and in-person interactions, providing timely updates and technical status reports.
  • Install, decommission, troubleshoot, and maintain fiber optic infrastructure and optical transport systems.
  • Perform and supervise optical testing using industry-standard tools, including:
  • Optical Power Meters
  • Stabilized Light Sources
  • Visual Fault Locators (VFL)
  • Optical Time Domain Reflectometers (OTDR)
  • Fiber Test Sets
  • Interpret and execute Methods of Procedure (MOPs), engineering documentation, vendor installation guides, network diagrams, and cut sheets.
  • Ensure accurate fiber routing, port connectivity, labeling, and cable management following industry best practices.
  • Maintain documentation and reporting for completed work and quality audits.
  • Promote safe work practices while meeting customer quality and operational standards.

Required Qualifications

  • 3–15 years of experience in data center operations, telecommunications, or a related technical field.
  • Previous team lead or field leadership experience.
  • Strong customer-facing communication and relationship management skills.
  • Experience working in mission-critical or high-availability data center environments.
  • Hands-on experience with structured fiber optic cabling, including:
  • Single-mode fiber (SMF)
  • Multi-mode fiber (MMF)
  • LC connectors
  • Fan-outs
  • Patch panels
  • Structured cabling systems
  • Experience performing optical testing and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, network diagrams, and installation documentation.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and administrative skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and customer ticketing systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in fast-paced environments while maintaining attention to detail.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfortable working in data center environments, including elevated work areas and varying environmental conditions.
  • Ability to travel extensively and support customer sites on short notice for extended durations.

Skills

  • Experience supporting optical transport networks in enterprise or hyperscale data centers.
  • Knowledge of structured cabling standards and industry best practices.
  • Experience with fiber remediation, migrations, and large-scale deployment projects.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities in production environments.
