About the Role:

The Data Center Operator plays a critical role in ensuring the continuous and efficient operation of the utility company's data center facilities located in Barker, NY. This position is responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting data center infrastructure, including servers, network equipment, power systems, and environmental controls. The operator ensures that all systems run optimally to support the utility's operational needs, minimizing downtime and preventing service interruptions. This role requires vigilance in identifying potential issues and responding promptly to alarms or failures to maintain data integrity and system availability. Ultimately, the Data Center Operator contributes to the reliability and security of the utility's critical data processing environment, supporting both internal teams and external stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical certification or associate degree in information technology or related field .
  • Basic understanding of data center operations, including hardware, networking, and power management.
  • Ability to work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as required to maintain 24/7 data center operations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail to identify and resolve technical issues effectively.
  • Good communication skills to document incidents clearly and coordinate with team members.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a data center or utilities environment is highly desirable.
  • Certifications such as CompTIA Server+, Data Center Certified Associate (DCCA), or similar credentials.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools and software used in data center management.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and regulatory compliance standards relevant to utilities and data centers.
  • Experience with emergency response procedures and disaster recovery planning.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor data center systems and infrastructure continuously to detect and resolve operational issues promptly.
  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance of hardware, including servers, cooling systems, power supplies, and backup generators.
  • Respond to alarms and incidents by diagnosing problems, escalating issues when necessary, and documenting all actions taken.
  • Coordinate with IT and facilities teams to implement upgrades, patches, and preventive maintenance activities.
  • Maintain accurate logs and reports related to system performance, incidents, and maintenance activities to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Skills:

The required skills enable the Data Center Operator to monitor and maintain complex data center systems effectively, ensuring operational continuity. Technical knowledge of hardware and networking allows the operator to troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly, minimizing downtime.
