Data Center Supervisor - Fiber Team

The Data Center Supervisor is a working supervisor who performs hands on fiber installation and splicing while leading a field crew. This role plans and coordinates daily activities on site, ensures that all work meets technical and safety standards, and reports progress, risks, and quality issues back to management and project stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead a crew of fiber technicians in the installation of data cabinets, racks, and optical distribution frames (ODF) according to engineering drawings and project requirements
  • Plan, assign, and oversee installation of pathway support systems (basket trays, ladder racks, cable managers, waterfalls), ensuring orderly and scalable routing
  • Supervise and guide fiber pulling (Outside plant/Insite plant), porting, and labeling; step in as a hands-on installer when required
  • Oversee routing, dressing, and securing of pre-connectorized fiber and patch cords in racks, cabinets, and panels
  • Perform and supervise fiber splicing of single mode and multimode fibers, including high count and complex cables
  • Ensure proper fiber preparation, stripping, cleaning, protection, and management in splice trays, enclosures, and patch panels
  • Establish test plans and oversee use of Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS), light source, power meter, Visual Fault Locator (VFL), and inspection scopes to certify fiber links
  • Review and sign off on insertion loss, return loss, reflectance, and continuity test results; ensure they meet customer and industry standards
  • Interpret complex OTDR traces, diagnose network problems, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
  • Maintain and review accurate records of splicing, fiber assignments, tray/rack layouts, test results, and repair history
  • Produce and approve customer ready test reports and as-built documentation for handover and acceptance
  • Ensure all field activities comply with TIA/EIA, BICSI, FOA, ITU-T, NEC, OSHA, and company/client standards
  • Coordinate daily activities and site logistics with project managers, construction managers, general contractors, and customer representatives; provide regular status reports to management
  • Travel 33%

SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS
The position requires daily contact with all levels of TECO-Westinghouse and customers including Engineering, Marketing, Factory Operations, Supply Chain, Service and Accounting.

QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Extensive hands on experience in fiber-optic splicing, testing, and installation
  • Proven experience supervising field crews on data center or telecom infrastructure projects
  • Proficiency with fusion splicers (e.g., Fujikura, Corning) and standard fiber preparation tools
  • Strong ability to read and interpret network design drawings, splice schematics, rack elevations
  • Advanced use of OTDRs, OLTS, power meters, VFL, fiber identifiers, and inspection scopes

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent or technical school, Bachelor’s
  • 3-5 years related experience and/or training in industrial drafting, or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience with design of rotating mechanical components and fabricated structures is ideal.
  • 1-3 years supervisory experience

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
One or more certifications:

    • FOA CFOT / CFOS
    • BICSI Technician or higher (e.g., RCDD) or equivalent regional qualification
    • OSHA 30 (OSHA 10 minimum)

SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, standards, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Vendor or manufacturer training (e.g., Corning, Fujikura)
  • Experience in hyperscale or enterprise data centers or large-scale fiber projects

SKILLS 
The ability to read, analyze, and interpret manufacturing drawings, repair specifications, test results, and technical journals.  Respond to inquiries from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.  Communicate effectively in the presence of top management, customers, trade associations, and other public groups.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS 
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as algebra, exponents, logarithms, and quadratic equations. 

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Indentify a solution to a problem involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General supervision will be provided.  Must be a self-starter with the ability to work effectively and take ownership of assigned projects in a fast-paced environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to vibration.  The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and the risk of electrical shock.  The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and extreme heat.  The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
