Data Center Technician II

An Experienced Data Center Technician is responsible for day-to-day data center operations and advanced hands-on technical support. The role focuses on maintaining uptime for server, network, storage, and data center infrastructure while performing complex troubleshooting, executing changes safely, and mentoring other technicians.

Previous AWS, Google, or Meta experience highly desired

Key responsibilities

  • Respondtoandtroubleshootincidentsinvolvingservers,switches,storagesystems,cabling,PDUs,coolingcomponents,andalarms;identifyrootcauseanddriveresolution.
  • Performadvancedbreak/fixandmigrations:rack-and-stack,hardwarereplacements,firmwareverification,andstructuredcablingchanges.
  • Executepreventiveandcorrectivemaintenancefollowingrunbooksandchangeprocedures(includingescalationtoengineeringwhenneeded).
  • Supportdatacenterinfrastructureoperationsincludingpowerdistributionawareness,UPS/generator-relatedoperationalchecks(asapplicable),airflowbestpractices,andcooling/CRAH-CRACmonitoringresponse.
  • Installandtestnetworkconnectivity(patchpanels,patchcords,optics/SFPs,VLAN/portverificationasapplicable).
  • Ownphysicallayerdocumentationquality:cablemaps,labelingstandards,rackdiagrams,assetrecords,andpost-changeupdates.
  • Manageworkordersandchangesinaticketing/changesystem,ensuringapprovals,sequencing,androllbacksarefollowed.
  • Maintaincomplianceandsafety:ESDprocedures,ladder/working-at-heightsafety,accesscontrol,andadherencetodatacenterstandards.
  • Coordinatewithvendorsandcross-functionalteams(networkengineering,platformteams,facilities,andsupport)duringoutagesandescalations.
  • Mentorjuniortechniciansthroughshadowing,coachingonprocedures,andimprovingteamplaybooks/runbooks.

Required skills

  • Strongexperiencewithserverhardwarelifecycle(install,replace,troubleshoot)andunderstandingofRAID/storagebasics.
  • Solidworkingknowledgeofnetworkingfundamentals(switchingconcepts,fiber/opticsbasics,cablingstandards,portverification).
  • Hands-onabilitywithstructuredcabling(copperandfiber),patching,labeling,andrackorganization.
  • Proficiencyusingticketing/ITSMsystems,monitoringtools,andescalationworkflows.
  • Competencereadingdiagrams,schematics,andrunbooks,andproducingcleardocumentationafterwork.
  • Demonstratedexperienceworkinginahigh-availability,safety-firstenvironmentwithcontrolledchangeprocesses.
  • Abilitytoliftandworkinconstrainedspaces(oftenrequiredforrackworkandcomponentswaps).

Qualifications (common)

  • Typically37+yearsofdatacenteroperations/technicianexperience(orequivalenthands-onwork).
  • TechnicaleducationinIT/networking/electronics(orequivalentpracticalexperience).
  • Experiencewithatleastonecommondatacenterenvironmentorplatformstack(servers/network/storage)ispreferred.

  • CertificationssuchasCompTIAA+/Network+,Cisco(CCNA),ITIL,orvendor-specifichardwarecertifications.
  • Experiencewithon-callrotation,outageresponse,andincidentcommandprinciples.
  • Knowledgeofdatacenterinfrastructuremonitoring(BMSalarms,environmentalmonitoring,power/coolingtelemetryroledependent).

Work conditions

  • On-siteworkinatemperature-controlledenvironment.
  • Shiftworkandon-callmayberequired.
  • Abilitytoworkundertimeconstraintsduringincidentsandscheduledmaintenancewindows.
