Our client is a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy delivering mechanical, electrical and specialist technical facility management services for mission-critical environments, including hyperscale and colocation data centers.

With a strong focus on reliability, efficiency and scalability, the business supports clients across the full lifecycle of data centers developments, from concept and detailed design through to commissioning and operational support.

As part of continued growth, they are seeking a Data Centre Mechanical Engineer to support the operation and maintenance of cooling and HVAC systems across complex, high-availability facilities.

 

About the Role

The Data Centre Mechanical Engineer will play a key role in the operation and maintenance support of mechanical and HVAC systems for data center projects. Working within a consultancy environment, you will collaborate closely with electrical, CFD, sustainability and BIM teams to deliver integrated, energy-efficient and resilient cooling solutions that meet stringent uptime and compliance requirements.

This role is suited to an mechanical engineer with consultancy experience and a strong understanding of data center mechanical infrastructure, with site-based facilities operations.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Operation and maintenance of mechanical and HVAC systems for data center projects, including chillers, CRAH/CRAC units, cooling towers, pumps and pipework.
  • Perform cooling load calculations, airflow analysis and capacity planning to meet current and future demand.
  • Ensure designs align with ASHRAE guidelines, client standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Support commissioning, testing and validation activities for new builds and expansions.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers on equipment selection.
  • Contribute to energy efficiency initiatives, PUE optimisation and sustainable strategies.
  • Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules for mechanical and HVAC equipment.
  • Respond to mechanical faults and coordinate corrective actions promptly.
  • Lead and supervise mechanical and HVAC technicians in daily operations and maintenance tasks
  • Provide monthly and quarterly reports to the Facility Manager on HVAC infrastructure status and improvement plans.
  • Conduct safety audits and enforce lockout/tagout procedures
  • Oversee operation and maintenance of chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, cooling towers, pumps, and piping systems.
  • Monitor temperature, humidity, and airflow to ensure compliance with ASHRAE standards and data center requirements
  • Optimise cooling efficiency and manage capacity planning
  • Assign work orders, monitor progress, and ensure adherence to safety protocols

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 3–5+ years’ experience delivering mechanical/HVAC design for data centers, critical facilities or complex engineering environments.
  • Experience working within an engineering consultancy strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of data center cooling systems, HVAC design principles and airflow management.
  • Familiarity with BMS, HVAC control strategies and integrated building systems.
  • Understanding of redundancy concepts (N, N+1, 2N) in mission-critical design.
  • Exposure to commissioning processes and design-stage support during construction beneficial.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g. CDCP, HVAC, data center training) advantageous but not essential.
