Design Manager

Job Description

M&E Design Manager

Location: London & South East (Project & Office Based)

Salary: Up to £100,000

Package: Car Allowance, Travel, Healthcare & Pension

The Opportunity

My client is a Tier 1, industry-leading contractor with a global reputation for engineering excellence and digital innovation. Operating at the forefront of the UK construction market, they deliver some of the country’s most complex and high-profile projects across healthcare, data centres, education, and major commercial hubs.

They are looking for an experienced M&E Design Manager to lead technical delivery and design coordination. This is a role for a "solutions-focused" engineer who thrives on complex problem-solving and wants to work for a business that is a genuine pioneer in BIM and sustainable construction.

The Role

You will be the technical lead for MEP services, bridging the gap between external design consultants and the on-site delivery teams. Your goal is to ensure that mechanical and electrical designs are fully coordinated, commercially viable, and compliant with both the client's brief and current regulations.

You will have the autonomy to manage the design process from RIBA Stage 3 through to construction and handover, ensuring that "Design for Manufacture and Assembly" (DfMA) and digital tools are utilized to their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Management: Lead the coordination of MEP services, ensuring zero clashes with structural and architectural elements.
  • Pre-Construction: Provide expert technical input during the tender phase and lead value engineering workshops to optimize project costs.
  • Consultant Oversight: Manage external MEP design consultants to ensure high-quality, timely, and compliant information flow.
  • BIM & Digital Delivery: Oversee the development of 3D models and utilize Navisworks/Revit for design reviews and clash detection.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all services designs meet BREEAM, fire safety, and building regulation standards.
  • Technical Support: Act as the primary point of contact for the site team to resolve technical design queries during the installation phase.

Requirements

  • Education: Degree or HND in Building Services Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical).
  • Experience: Significant experience in a Design Management role for a Tier 1 or large-scale regional contractor.
  • Project Exposure: A background in delivering complex MEP packages (Healthcare, Pharma, or Large Commercial experience is highly valued).
  • Software Skills: Working knowledge of BIM processes and Revit/Navisworks environments.
  • Competencies: Strong leadership skills, commercially aware, and able to challenge design consultants effectively.

The Package

  • Salary: Up to £100,000 (Basic).
  • Car Allowance: Highly competitive monthly allowance or company car.
  • Travel: Travel from Home to office / Site expensed
  • Benefits: Private medical insurance, enhanced pension, and a discretionary bonus.

How to Apply

If you are looking to join a business that leads the market in engineering technology and offers a high-degree of professional autonomy, please send your CV to mjones@skilledcareers.co.uk
