Job Specification: Electrical Design Engineer (Senior - Lead)\n\nBusiness Unit: Data Centre Design Consultancy (Client Side)\n Location: Remote \n Reporting to: Associate Director/Director \n\nOverview\n\nWe are seeking highly skilled Senior and Lead Electrical Design Engineers to join our specialist data centre design consultancy team. These roles will be responsible for driving the design, coordination, and delivery of complex electrical systems for hyperscale, colocation, and enterprise data centre environments.\n You will work directly with clients, end users, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop high‑quality, technically robust designs from concept through to construction.\n\nCore Responsibilities (All Levels)\n\nLead and produce electrical designs for data centre infrastructure including:\nHV and LV power distribution\nUPS systems (static and rotary)\nStandby \nEarthing and bonding\nLighting and small power\nBusbar distribution systems\nDevelop design documentation: calculations, reports, schematics, single-line diagrams, and specifications.\nCollaborate with mechanical, structural, architectural, and commissioning teams.\nEnsure compliance with: \nUK/EU electrical standards (BS7671, EN standards)\nUptime Institute Tier guidelines\nClient technical specifications\nLocal authority and utility provider requirements\nParticipate in technical design reviews and value engineering workshops.\nSupport tender evaluations, contractor queries, and construction phase design support.\nContribute to continuous improvement of design processes and best practices.\n\nExperience & Requirements by Level\n\nSenior Electrical Design Engineer\n\nExperience\n\nTypically 5-8 years electrical design experience.\nDemonstrable experience designing critical power systems.\nPrior data centre project exposure but not essential if background includes mission‑critical environments (pharma, hospitals, industrial).\nCompetent in delivering multiple design packages under guidance from a Lead or Principal Engineer.\n\nTechnical Competencies\n\nStrong grasp of: \nLV distribution design\nUPS system selection & load calculations\nGenerator sizing\nCable sizing and fault level studies\nCompetent in electrical calculation software (e.g., Amtech/Trimble, Dialux, ETAP beneficial).\nAbility to produce design deliverables independently with technical checking by senior leadership.\n\nSoft Skills\n\nGood communication and client‑facing ability.\nAbility to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.\nStrong organisational skills and proactive problem solving. \n\nPrincipal Electrical Design Engineer\nExperience\n\n12-18+ years experience in electrical engineering with deep specialism in data centre design.\nDemonstrated ability to lead multi‑disciplinary design teams on hyperscale or global data centre programmes.\nStrong experience engaging with end users, developers, and hyperscale clients at a strategic level.\n\nTechnical Competencies\n\nRecognised expert in:\n\nHigh‑voltage system design, utility grid integration & negotiations\nFull MEP system interaction & resilience strategies\nAdvanced power systems: network modelling, short‑circuit analysis, arc flash studies, and system selectivity\nDesigning to Uptime Institute Tier III & Tier IV\n\nAbility to define project technical strategy, design principles, and standardisation frameworks.\n\nLeadership & Strategic Responsibilities\n\nActs as the Technical Authority for electrical systems.\nLeads QA/QC process and sets engineering standards across projects.\nProvides key input into bids, proposals, and business development.\nTrains, mentors, and develops the engineering team.\nCoordinates with Directors on resource planning, pipeline forecasting, and client strategy.\n\nSoft Skills\n\nExceptional communication, influencing, and negotiation ability.\nAbility to represent the business as a subject matter expert.\nHigh‑level problem solving, innovation, and risk management.\n\nLead Electrical Design Engineer\n\nExperience\n\nTypically 8-12+ years experience in electrical building services design.\nProven track record leading electrical design on major data centre projects.\nExperience interfacing directly with hyperscale or colocation clients (Google, AWS, Meta, Microsoft, etc., if applicable).\nCapable of managing electrical design delivery across entire projects or programmes.\n\nTechnical Competencies\n\nExpert knowledge of: \nComplex power distribution (N+1, 2N, 2N+1 systems)\nHV systems design and utility interfacing\nAdvanced power system studies (discrimination, arc flash, harmonic analysis)\nResilience modelling & load assessments\nAbility to technically lead teams and review work from Senior and Junior Engineers.\nStrong commercial awareness and ability to influence design strategy.\n\nSoft Skills\n\nExcellent communication and stakeholder management skills.\nComfortable presenting to clients, design teams, and senior leadership.\nStrong leadership in design coordination, technical decision-making, and project delivery.\nAbility to mentor and develop junior engineers.\n\nPlease click to find out more about our Key Information Documents.
