Electrical Designer

Job Description

SOLIDWORKS ELECTRICAL DESIGNER

\n

Houston, TX | Full-Time

\n

$85,000–$115,000 annually | Non-Exempt

\n

\n

We're looking for an experienced SolidWorks Electrical Designer with strong hands-on 3D modeling experience to support the design and integration of electrical systems within complex engineered and manufactured equipment.

\n

\n

This role is ideal for someone who understands how electrical equipment, cable-management systems, controls, and instrumentation must physically integrate within a 3D environment while accounting for manufacturability, installation access, serviceability, electrical clearances, routing, and code requirements.

\n

\n

You'll work closely with Electrical and Controls Engineering as well as mechanical, structural, piping, manufacturing, project, and supply chain teams to turn engineering requirements into accurate, production-ready designs.

\n

What You'll Do

\n

    \n
  • Develop and maintain coordinated 3D SolidWorks models and assemblies for electrical systems and components.
  • \n

  • Model equipment such as switchgear, busway, MCCs, panelboards, transformers, VFDs, control panels, disconnects, junction boxes, instrumentation, cable tray, conduit, supports, and grounding components.
  • \n

  • Interpret electrical one-lines, control schematics, P&IDs, I/O lists, points lists, equipment schedules, vendor drawings, and project specifications.
  • \n

  • Establish practical routing for power, controls, instrumentation, communications, and other electrical systems.
  • \n

  • Account for cable bend radius, fill, segregation, support, termination locations, installation access, and maintenance clearances.
  • \n

  • Produce and revise electrical design documentation including layouts, interconnection drawings, schematics, cable/conduit plans, wiring details, schedules, BOMs, and installation details.
  • \n

  • Coordinate electrical layouts with mechanical, structural, piping, controls, and other disciplines.
  • \n

  • Identify and resolve clashes, clearance issues, unsupported routes, access conflicts, and constructability concerns before drawings are released.
  • \n

  • Create and maintain SolidWorks parts, assemblies, vendor models, library components, custom properties, drawing views, dimensions, callouts, and BOM structures.
  • \n

  • Ensure models, drawings, schedules, BOMs, and revision information remain accurate and synchronized.
  • \n

  • Participate in model reviews, drawing checks, and interdisciplinary design reviews.
  • \n

  • Support Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality, field installation, startup, and commissioning by resolving design and routing questions.
  • \n

  • Maintain controlled revisions, redlines, change notices, and as-built documentation.
  • \n

  • Help improve SolidWorks templates, modeling standards, electrical libraries, routing practices, and repeatable design processes.
  • \n

\n

\n

What We're Looking For

\n

    \n
  • 5+ years of electrical or controls design/drafting experience in industrial equipment, manufacturing, modular construction, power distribution, MEP, or a comparable engineered-product environment.
  • \n

  • 5+ years of hands-on SolidWorks experience creating and revising 3D parts, assemblies, equipment layouts, and production drawings.
  • \n

  • Strong 3D design capability — experience limited primarily to 2D drafting will not be sufficient for this position.
  • \n

  • Experience modeling or physically integrating electrical components and equipment within 3D assemblies.
  • \n

  • Experience producing manufacturing- or installation-level electrical drawings, schedules, BOMs, and controlled design documentation.
  • \n

  • Experience laying out electrical equipment and cable-management systems while resolving interferences, access constraints, and multidisciplinary interfaces.
  • \n

  • Strong understanding of electrical equipment, cable routing, conduit, cable tray, grounding, controls, instrumentation, and power distribution.
  • \n

  • Ability to read and reconcile one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, I/O lists, cable schedules, P&IDs, and vendor documentation.
  • \n

  • Experience working within a PDM/PLM, document-control, or formal revision/change-management environment.
  • \n

  • Strong attention to detail, spatial reasoning, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills.
  • \n

\n

\n

SolidWorks Experience Is Important

\n

We're especially interested in candidates who have recent, production-level SolidWorks experience.

\n

Strong candidates should be comfortable independently creating and working with:

\n

    \n
  • Complex 3D assemblies
  • \n

  • Parts and component models
  • \n

  • Electrical equipment layouts
  • \n

  • Interference detection
  • \n

  • Configurations and design tables
  • \n

  • Drawing packages and BOMs
  • \n

  • Cable and conduit routing
  • \n

  • Electrical libraries and reusable components
  • \n

  • Production-ready manufacturing documentation
  • \n

\n

Electrical design experience gained using another platform may also be considered if it involved substantial 3D design and modeling experience.

\n

\n

Experience

\n

Experience with any of the following is especially valuable:

\n

    \n
  • SOLIDWORKS Electrical 3D
  • \n

  • SOLIDWORKS Routing
  • \n

  • SOLIDWORKS Electrical Schematic Professional
  • \n

  • SolidWorks PDM/EPDM
  • \n

  • AutoCAD Electrical
  • \n

  • Revit or Navisworks
  • \n

  • Data center or mission-critical infrastructure
  • \n

  • Chiller or central utility plants
  • \n

  • Modular or packaged equipment
  • \n

  • Industrial power distribution
  • \n

  • Switchgear, MCCs, VFDs, transformers, UPS systems, or control panels
  • \n

  • Cable tray, conduit, grounding, and bonding
  • \n

  • PLC hardware and I/O architecture
  • \n

  • Fabrication and panel construction
  • \n

  • Factory testing and commissioning
  • \n

  • Infor LN or comparable ERP systems
  • \n

\n

Working knowledge of NEC/NFPA 70, NFPA 79, UL 508A, UL 891, and applicable IEC requirements is also highly desirable.

\n

\n

Education

\n

    \n
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • \n

  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or formal technical training is .
  • \n

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, engineering technology, or a related field is but not required.
  • \n

  • Direct, relevant industry experience may substitute for post-secondary education.
  • \n

\n

\n

Why Consider This Opportunity?

\n

This is an opportunity for a strong SolidWorks designer to work on complex multidisciplinary equipment where electrical design must function in the real world—not just on a schematic. You'll see your work move from engineering requirements and 3D models into fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, and commissioning. The role also provides the opportunity to help improve SolidWorks libraries, templates, routing standards, modeling practices, and repeatable modular designs.

\n

\n

If you're a heavy SolidWorks user with electrical design experience and know how to turn electrical requirements into accurate, buildable 3D designs, we'd like to hear from you.
