Senior Electrical Engineer – Data Center Infrastructure

Apex Infrastructure Consultants is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to support mission-critical and data center projects throughout the Northern Virginia (NOVA) region, primarily Ashburn and surrounding areas.
\n
\n
This role will focus on electrical system design, medium-voltage and high-voltage power distribution, substation coordination, engineering reviews, construction support, and operational reliability improvements for large-scale data center environments.

About the Role
\n
This position is ideal for an experienced electrical engineer with strong knowledge of data center electrical systems, power distribution, substations, switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, generators, and utility interconnections.
\n
\n
The ideal candidate has experience supporting electrical infrastructure across design, construction, commissioning, or operational engineering environments for hyperscale data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial facilities, or large infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities
\n
Hyperscale Data Center Electrical Design
\n
- \n
- Review and support the development of electrical systems for hyperscale data centers, including campus planning, electrical distribution layouts, and system architecture.
- Evaluate and provide technical guidance on medium-voltage and high-voltage infrastructure, including substations, switchgear, transformers, and electrical distribution systems.
- Support design development for site substations and utility interconnections, including systems up to 345kV.
- Review electrical design documents, engineering calculations, single-line diagrams, system models, specifications, and sequence of operations.
- Perform peer reviews of engineering deliverables to ensure alignment with project requirements, technical standards, and industry best practices.
- Provide technical direction to external design consultants, engineering partners, and project stakeholders.
- Identify value engineering opportunities, design improvements, and system optimization strategies.
- Develop conceptual sketches, layouts, and technical documentation to support engineering evaluations and design coordination.

Operational Engineering Support
\n

- Support engineering initiatives for operational data center campuses.
- Evaluate electrical system performance, incident reports, reliability concerns, and root cause analyses.
- Provide recommendations to improve electrical system reliability, resiliency, maintainability, and operational efficiency.
- Analyze operational data and equipment performance trends to support predictive maintenance and infrastructure planning.
- Develop engineering solutions and infrastructure improvement strategies across multiple facilities.

Construction and Project Support
\n

- Work closely with construction, design, commissioning, and engineering teams to evaluate and resolve technical issues during project execution.
- Review field conditions and construction-related engineering challenges and provide practical technical solutions.
- Support engineering change management, design updates, and technical issue resolution.
- Coordinate design improvements across engineering, construction, commissioning, and operations teams.

Engineering Documentation and Analysis
\n

- Develop engineering presentations, technical documentation, and recommendations for project stakeholders.
- Perform engineering calculations, system evaluations, and technical analyses using spreadsheets and engineering tools.
- Maintain organized documentation of design reviews, system analyses, engineering evaluations, and technical decisions.

Qualifications
\n

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required.
- Professional Engineer license .
- 5+ years of experience in electrical engineering, electrical design, construction support, or commissioning.
- Experience with electrical distribution systems for data centers, mission-critical facilities, industrial facilities, or large infrastructure projects.
- Experience with medium-voltage, high-voltage, and low-voltage electrical infrastructure.
- Experience with primary substations, utility interconnections, or electrical systems up to 345kV .
- Strong understanding of electrical infrastructure components, including:
- Switchgear and switchboards
- UPS systems
- Generators
- Transformers
- Power distribution equipment
- Monitoring and control systems
- Experience reviewing single-line diagrams, electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, and system studies.
- Experience performing or reviewing power system studies, electrical system analysis, or engineering calculations.
- Familiarity with CAD, BIM, or electrical design software.
- Ability to coordinate across multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, mechanical, telecommunications, architectural, construction, commissioning, and operations stakeholders.
