Electrical Technical Director – Mission Critical / Data Centres

Location: London, UK (Hybrid – Minimum 3 days in the office, Monday to Wednesday)

Our client is a highly respected, privately owned engineering consultancy delivering some of the world's most technically challenging mission-critical and data centre developments across the UK, Europe and the Middle East.

Following significant growth and an expanding portfolio of hyperscale and colocation projects, they are seeking an exceptional Electrical Technical Director to become the recognised technical authority within their business.

This is not a traditional Technical Director position. They are looking for an engineer first and a leader second.

This opportunity is designed for an individual who remains passionate about engineering, enjoys solving complex technical challenges, mentors others through technical excellence and wants to influence the future direction of electrical engineering across a rapidly growing organisation.

The Opportunity

This appointment represents one of the most influential technical positions within the business.

As Electrical Technical Director, you will become the senior electrical authority responsible for driving engineering excellence, maintaining technical consistency and supporting the successful delivery of major mission-critical developments throughout Europe and the Middle East.

Rather than focusing on business development or departmental management, you will remain actively involved in engineering design, technical governance, design assurance and solving the industry's most challenging electrical engineering problems.

Working alongside senior leadership, you will help shape engineering standards, mentor technical teams and influence the future capability of an organisation experiencing exceptional international growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the recognised technical authority for electrical engineering across mission-critical and data centre projects.
  • Provide technical leadership from concept design through to detailed engineering and construction support.
  • Lead technical design reviews, engineering assurance and governance across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Review, challenge and approve complex engineering calculations, technical reports and design solutions.
  • Develop robust electrical infrastructure strategies covering utility interfaces, HV and MV distribution, standby generation, UPS systems and critical power architecture.
  • Support multidisciplinary engineering teams in delivering coordinated MEP solutions across international projects.
  • Mentor and develop engineers, helping build technical capability throughout the business.
  • Establish and continually improve engineering standards, technical procedures and quality assurance processes.
  • Provide technical leadership during client workshops, design reviews and engineering decision-making.
  • Support bid development by providing innovative technical solutions for complex mission-critical facilities.
  • Resolve high-risk engineering challenges while maintaining exceptional technical quality across every stage of project delivery.

Technical Expertise

Applicants should possess extensive experience across mission-critical electrical infrastructure including:

  • HV and MV electrical distribution
  • Utility interface strategy
  • Critical power systems
  • UPS architecture
  • Mission-critical electrical infrastructure
  • International design standards and best practice
  • Data centre resilience and availability strategies

Skills & Experience

The successful candidate is likely to demonstrate:

  • Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards) is highly desirable.
  • Typically 15–20+ years' experience within building services or mission-critical engineering consultancy.
  • Significant experience delivering hyperscale and colocation data centre developments.
  • Proven experience acting as a senior technical reviewer and engineering authority on major international projects.
  • Strong understanding of international engineering standards and mission-critical design principles.
  • Exceptional technical problem-solving ability with a meticulous attention to engineering quality.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and developing high-performing technical teams.
  • Ability to influence technical decisions at both project and organisational level.

This Role Is Ideal For Someone Who...

  • Wants to remain hands-on technically rather than move into a purely commercial or management position.
  • Enjoys reviewing engineering calculations and solving complex technical challenges.
  • Is recognised by colleagues as the person they turn to when projects encounter difficult engineering problems.
  • Gains satisfaction from mentoring engineers and improving technical capability across an organisation.
  • Wants to influence engineering standards across one of the fastest-growing mission-critical consultancies in the market.

Why Join?

This is a rare opportunity to shape the future technical direction of a rapidly expanding engineering consultancy delivering some of the industry's most complex mission-critical developments.

You will have genuine influence over engineering strategy, technical standards and project delivery while remaining actively involved in solving the engineering challenges that define the next generation of hyperscale and digital infrastructure.

If you're looking for a role where your technical expertise will genuinely shape a business, not just support one, this represents an exceptional career opportunity.
