Job Summary:
As the Equipment Operator, Construction, you will ultimately be responsible for safely operating heavy construction equipment, supporting underground utility installation, and assisting construction crews with daily field operations. You will perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, equipment inspections, and preventative maintenance while delivering safe, efficient, and high-quality construction services. As the Equipment Operator, Construction, your customers are project managers, foremen, construction crews, and telecommunications clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through safe equipment operation, quality workmanship, and dependable field support.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
- Communicate effectively with Project Managers, Foremen, Crew Leaders, and Laborers throughout daily operations
- Operate tamping machines and heavy equipment in accordance with company procedures and project specifications
- Inspect equipment daily, perform preventative maintenance, and complete equipment inspection reports
- Load and unload materials, tools, and equipment at job sites
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas
- Inspect and safely operate hand tools used in construction activities
- Operate equipment including track hoes, backhoes, mini excavators, skid steers, dozers, haul trucks, and other construction equipment
- Safely excavate and backfill trenches for underground utility installations
- Operate equipment safely around existing underground utilities
- Work effectively using hand signals from ground personnel
- Utilize trench protection and shoring systems in accordance with safety requirements
- Perform rigging and setting of structures
- Assist construction crews with conduit placement, proofing conduits, potholing existing utilities, concrete forming and placement, and asphalt installation
- Maintain company vehicles and equipment while ensuring proper utilization
- Ensure compliance with customer specifications and project requirements
- Promote and maintain safe work practices at all times
- Complete all required annual safety training
- Participate in required drug screening programs
- Report injuries, incidents, and unsafe conditions promptly
- Ensure work sites are clean and organized at the end of each shift
- Coordinate daily work activities according to construction plans and specifications
- Identify work outside the defined project scope and communicate concerns appropriately
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR)
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience operating heavy equipment in underground utility construction
- Experience operating excavators, backhoes, skid steers, dozers, haul trucks, and similar construction equipment
- Experience with trench protection, excavation, and underground utility installation
- Knowledge of OSHA construction safety requirements and construction procedures
- Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and blueprints
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to safely operate heavy construction equipment in active utility construction environments
- Ability to assist construction crews with lifting materials, tools, equipment, and related construction activities
- Knowledge of basic shoring systems and excavation safety
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with inspectors, supervisors, crews, and clients
- Ability to interpret construction methods, specifications, and engineering drawings
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
- Effective time management and organizational abilities
- Ability to complete daily reports and required documentation
- Ability to follow instructions and maintain a safety-first mindset
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Excellent vision or corrected vision with prescription lenses
- Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination
- Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 5 years of heavy equipment operating experience
- Experience excavating around energized or live underground utilities
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- OSHA 30 Certification
- Trench and Excavation Safety and Competent Person Training
- Basic computer skills
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and perform physically demanding work throughout the workday
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment for extended periods
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to travel to various project sites as business needs require
- Ability to pass pre-employment drug screening and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) requirements
