Fiber Optic Telecommunications Engineer
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Prepare Requirements for the Communications System (Fiber optic, etc.).
- Prepare Design Specifications and Drawings for Communications System.
- Prepare Bill of Material and Cost Estimate.
- Supervise and participate in cable installation.
- Prepare Request for Proposals (RFPs).
- Evaluate Bids (Technical and Cost Proposals).
- Provide Recommendations for Vendor Selection.
- Review Project Implementation Plans.
- Review Design Documents.
- Review Test Plans and Test Procedures.
- Participate in Factory and System Acceptance Tests.
- Review Design Change Notice and Change Order Requested by Contractor and Provide Recommendations.
- Provide Project Management Support for Implementation.
Qualifications & Skills:
- Bachelors degree or technical certificate in telecommunications, electrical engineering technology, fiber-optics, or similar field.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in fiber-optic installation, termination, testing, and maintenance (outside plant (OSP) and/or inside plant (ISP) networks).
- Experience working in high-security / critical infrastructure environments (airport, data centre, utility) is strongly .
- Proven ability to install, splice, terminate (fusion and mechanical), test (OTDR, OLTS, VFL) and troubleshoot fiber-optic cable plants.
- Understanding of structured cabling standards, fiber optic cable routing, conduit installation, demarcation, patch-panels, racks and termination enclosures.
- Familiarity with electronics, low-voltage systems, communications system grounding, bonding, and safety protocols.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, fiber-optic loss budgets, test reports, and as-built documentation.
- Strong physical capability for field work cable pulls, conduit runs, working at heights, in mechanical rooms, tunnels, racks, etc.
- Commitment to safety compliance: lock-out/tag-out, OSHA/Cal-OSHA rules, airport security clearance, PPE usage.
- Knowledge of the relevant standards (TIA-568, TIA-569, IEEE, ANSI, fiber optic best practices) and airport/utility compliance as well as knowledge of Class C-7 Low Voltage Systems Standard.
