Job Summary:
As the Ground Hand, you will ultimately be responsible for supporting line construction activities, assisting Linemen with job site preparation, and performing manual labor required for safe and efficient project execution. You will assist construction crews with daily field operations and deliver dependable support to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently. As the Ground Hand, your customers are internal construction teams, project managers, and utility clients, and you will make meaningful contributions to the company's success through teamwork, safe work practices, and reliable field support.
Key Responsibilities (Including, but not limited to):
- Assist Linemen with loading, unloading, organizing, and preparing tools, materials, equipment, and supplies at each job site
- Perform manual labor tasks including cleaning trucks, digging ditches, tamping, cutting brush, moving materials, and preparing work areas
- Assist with traffic control and maintain safe work zone operations
- Perform physically demanding construction duties in support of line crews
- Drive company vehicles between the yard and job sites when authorized
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures while supporting construction activities
- Additional responsibilities within functional scope based on business needs
Required Qualifications:
Education, Licensing, and Certifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license required
- OSHA 10 Certification
- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
Experience
- Entry-level position; previous construction or outdoor labor experience
- Experience working in utility, telecommunications, or construction environments is a plus
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to follow directions and instructions from supervisors and crew leaders
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate using radios and hand signals
- Ability to identify unsafe conditions and take appropriate corrective action
- Self-motivated with the ability to meet productivity and attendance expectations
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing between 40 and 90 pounds
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call schedules as business needs require
Qualifications:
- Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- Previous utility, telecommunications, or construction labor experience
- Experience supporting overhead or underground line construction crews
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing 40–90 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces for extended periods
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to safely operate company vehicles and work around heavy equipment and machinery
- Ability to maintain visual and audible awareness of crew members, equipment, and surrounding work activities
- Ability to work while wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses, and other required safety gear
- Ability to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call assignments
