Overview:
The HR Generalist supports the full employee lifecycle and plays a key role in fostering a positive, compliant, and high-performing workplace. This role provides day-to-day HR support to employees and managers, assists in implementing HR policies and programs, and ensures consistent, people-focused operations across all locations. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable working in a fast-paced, rapidly growing organization.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Recruiting & Onboarding
- Support full-cycle recruiting including job postings, applicant management, interview coordination, and candidate communication
- Post jobs, manage job boards, and track applicants (LinkedIn, Indeed, internal ATS)
- Submit background checks
- Draft and send offer letters; track signed offers and start dates
- Own new-hire onboarding checklist (equipment requests, I-9, ADP setup, Teams access, etc.)
- Work with IT and Ops on first-day readiness
- Schedule 90-day check-ins
HR Administration
- Maintain accurate employee records in HRIS/ADP, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
- Assist in administering benefits, enrollments, qualifying life events, and employee questions.
- Support payroll processes by gathering changes, auditing hours, and troubleshooting issues.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws (wage & hour, leaves, ADA, EEO, safety, etc.).
- Assist in maintaining and updating HR policies and the employee handbook.
Timekeeping, Leaves & Compliance
- Administer PTO, sick time, and leave programs (FMLA, NY PFL, parental leave)
- Process return-to-work forms + leave documentation
- Monitor exemptions, overtime rules, and break compliance by state
- Manage incident/injury reporting; workers comp claims coordination
Compensation & Benefits Support
- Process bi-weekly payroll changes (new hires, promotions, terminations, deductions)
- Audit payroll reports each cycle before approval
- Support open enrollment (communication, elections tracking, carrier updates)
- Answer employee benefit questions (401k, medical, dental, vision, HSA/FSA)
- Maintain 401(k) eligibility, enrollment, and match tracking
Reporting & Tracking
- Maintain headcount dashboard (by state/office/role)
- Create monthly HR metrics (hires, terms, turnover, promotions, leave usage)
Offboarding
- Conduct exit interviews (interns + full-time)
- Process terminations in ADP
- Remove system access and handle benefit termination notices
- Prepare final pay and applicable state notices (NY, AZ)
Policy & Process Development
- Update employee handbook and SOPs
- Create new HR processes as company grows (review cycles, promotion process, onboarding workflows)
- Partner with leadership on organizational structure and role clarity
Education & Experience:
- 2–5 years of HR experience, preferably in a fast-paced or multi-state environment
- Strong understanding of employment laws and HR best practices
- Experience with HRIS systems (ADP Workforce Now strongly )
- Excellent communication, organization, and follow-through
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and handle sensitive information
- Strong attention to detail and a proactive, solution-oriented mindset
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field ; HR certification (PHR/SHRM-CP) is a plus
Compensation:
Base Compensation: $65,000-$110,000 (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to factors such as education, experience, skills and/or location)
SMC offers a competitive benefits package, with a 36-hour standard work week, hybrid working arrangement, 13 paid holidays, 100% coverage of medical, health, and dental insurance premiums for our full-time employees, and reimbursement of professional licensing costs.
