Junior Engineer

Job Description

We are seeking a motivated Junior Engineer to support the delivery of data center projects across design, commercial, installation, and commissioning phases for a client of ours, a Data Center developer.

You will be in succession for a Senior Engineer role and will benefit from a mentor engineer you will be shadowing.

This role offers hands-on exposure to critical infrastructure projects, working closely with Sales, Project, and Maintenance teams, as well as third-party contractors and clients.

The successful candidate will gain end-to-end experience across the full lifecycle of data center projects, with strong development opportunities in engineering, project delivery, and compliance.

Engineering & Design Support

  • Conduct site visits to assess facilities and prepare electrical designs and data center proposals
  • Prepare build works, UPS, generator, fire systems, BMS/DCIM specifications and requirements
  • Produce detailed drawings and schematics in collaboration with the drawings/design team
  • Issue technical specifications to third-party contractors
  • Obtain and evaluate third-party quotations
  • Handover completed detailed design specifications to Project Managers

Commercial & Pre-Construction Support

  • Assist with the preparation of budgets and detailed quotations
  • Support the Sales team with tenders, proposals, and technical presentations
  • Order major equipment items, particularly long lead-time components

Site & Project Delivery

  • Carry out regular site visits to ensure:
  • Design criteria are followed by internal engineers and external contractors
  • Compliance with British Standards
  • High standards of quality control and good working practices
  • Act as on-site supervisor for external contractors when required
  • Support project and resource management activities
  • Participate in out-of-hours installation works (optional)

Testing, Commissioning & Handover

  • Conduct site visits for:
  • Electrical installation testing
  • Equipment commissioning
  • Integrated system testing
  • Assist Project and Maintenance Managers with the preparation of Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manuals
  • Prepare written equipment procedures, including:
  • Description of Operations (DesOps)
  • UPS bypass and switching procedures

Compliance, Health & Safety

  • Prepare and review Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) for internal engineers and contractors
  • Support NICEIC Principal Duty Holder & Qualified Supervisor responsibilities, including:
  • Preparing certification for engineers and contractors
  • Reviewing electrical test results
  • Maintaining certification and compliance records:
  • Installation Test Records
  • Health & Safety documentation
  • Insurance and regulatory publications (BS7671, BS5266, BS5839, etc.)
  • Preparing for and hosting NICEIC Area Engineer assessment visits

Operations & Client Engagement

  • Attend weekly maintenance, management, and departmental meetings
  • Attend client meetings as required
  • Provide ongoing technical support to Project and Maintenance teams
  • Assist with incident reports, root cause analysis, and preparation of RAID logs
  • Support the identification and management of risks, assumptions, issues, and dependencies within data center environments

Skills & Experience

  • Qualification in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (or working towards)
  • Strong interest in data center and critical infrastructure projects
  • Basic understanding of UPS, generators, LV electrical systems, and building services
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Willingness to travel to site and occasionally work out of hours
  • A proactive, hands-on approach and desire to learn
