Job Title: MEP Project Manager
Location: Montgomery, AL (Relocation Assistance Available or $650/week Living Allowance for Travelers)

Salary:
- Project Manager: $110,000–$125,000 (1 Opening)
- Senior Project Manager: $120,000–$140,000 (1 Opening)
Travel: 0–25% to job sites/office locations
Reports To: Business Unit Manager and Operations Manager
Position Overview
Wheeler Staffing Partners is seeking Project Manager and Senior Project Manager candidates to oversee large-scale mechanical and plumbing-focused construction projects, including a long-term data center project continuing through 2030.
This role requires experience working for mechanical subcontractors (not General Contractors or Owner’s Representatives) and a proven track record of managing direct labor teams and project financials from initiation through completion. Data center experience is required.
The Project Manager will lead installation efforts for MEP systems, coordinate teams, and manage budgets for large commercial and healthcare construction projects. The Senior Project Manager will oversee all aspects of the project, including direct field labor, subcontractors, cost forecasting, and schedule management, ensuring safe, quality, and compliant execution.
Relocation support is available for candidates outside the Montgomery area, with a weekly living allowance for traveling professionals.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Installation Oversight
- Lead the installation of HVAC, plumbing, and medical gas systems for large commercial and healthcare projects, including data centers
- Ensure all work complies with contract specifications, safety codes, and project timelines
- Collaborate with clients, general contractors, and internal teams to maintain smooth project execution
Financial & Budget Management
- Manage full project financial lifecycle, including budgeting, forecasting, and tracking projected costs throughout the duration of the project
- Set up job costing including labor, material, and subcontractor cost codes
- Track project budgets, review estimates, and generate monthly cost reviews
- Identify deviations from project plans and proactively recommend corrective actions
Vendor & Subcontractor Coordination
- Negotiate and manage vendor and subcontractor contracts
- Review submittals against drawings and specifications for accuracy
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and subcontractors to ensure project success
Team Leadership & Development
- Directly manage field labor teams, including foremen, superintendents, and trade workers
- Provide hands-on leadership and oversight of day-to-day field operations
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and high performance
- Conduct safety meetings, incident investigations, and site walks
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure adherence to all safety, code, and regulatory requirements on project sites
- Maintain awareness of infection control procedures and other healthcare-specific compliance standards (for healthcare projects)
- Monitor risk and implement mitigation strategies to avoid delays or cost overruns
Reporting & Communication
- Prepare project reports, schedules, and performance updates for leadership
- Document meetings, site activities, and project milestones accurately
- Provide updates to clients and stakeholders regarding project progress and potential challenges
Required Qualifications
Experience
- Project Manager: 5–10 years of project management experience with mechanical or plumbing subcontractors
- Senior Project Manager: 10+ years of project management experience on large commercial projects ($15–$25M); data center experience required
- Proven experience managing mechanical and/or plumbing projects is required
- Must have experience directly managing field labor teams (candidates with only General Contractor or Owner’s Representative experience will not be considered)
- Demonstrated experience managing project financials, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost projections throughout the project lifecycle
- Hands-on experience in plumbing/piping systems and mechanical construction
- Experience managing subcontractors, field labor, and high-value project budgets
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Engineering (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical), or applicable technical field
- Equivalent field experience in HVAC/plumbing considered, especially for candidates with trade progression
Skills
- Strong verbal and written communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
- Knowledge of construction industry best practices, contract types, and MEP systems
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to track and forecast project costs
- Safety-focused with experience conducting safety meetings and site inspections
