NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST
PAY PLAN: 118 - $ 50,492.00 minimum salary
Distinguishing Features of the Position (Summary)
Performs technical work in support of assigned IT programs or communications function. Duties include providing network and security support for all servers and network devices. Positions in this class perform routine technology maintenance and identify needed corrective actions to resolve discrepancies; answer information technology questions; and maintain systems documents and records.
Essential Functions
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Installs and configures software on new personal computers with related peripherals; installs, sets up and configures voice and data communication systems; troubleshoots, resolves and documents applications and software issues; performs routine and preventive maintenance on communications and/or computer equipment.
Monitors and reports operating system efficiency in terms of disk space allocating, terminal/PC usage and response times; monitors system utilization measurements using system utilities; executes and monitors job streams; monitors on line application systems for error or misuse.
Sets up and configures servers with related peripherals applications; troubleshoots and corrects network devices and their related peripherals; performs routine maintenance on network and server equipment and peripherals.
Assists in network and data wiring, including proper termination, labeling and documentation; maintains inventory for system management; performs system configuration, and ensures system backups on servers under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor.
Runs weekly reports of service request/work order progress; copies and/or distributes reports; establishes and maintains both automated and manual accounting records and files; and performs record retention tasks as dictated by County policy.
Prepares, reviews, and processes purchasing documents. Maintains assigned inventory; prepares purchase orders for needed software, communications, materials, equipment, and supplies; receives and distributes incoming shipments; reviews and forwards for payment.
Prepares various department network documents requiring knowledge of department policies, programs, and procedures and which may involve researching, compiling, analyzing, retrieving and/or summarizing data.
Provides assistance and information to employees, managers, vendors, , local businesses, and/or and other interested parties regarding assigned technology functions.
Additional Functions
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Computer Information Systems or IT/MIS or related field; supplemented by two (2) years of experience performing technical support and/or telecommunications work in a data center or computer technical support shop; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert medium physical effort in medium work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium weight (20-50 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motion at a keyboard on site or work station.
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility. Must submit to a Civil Service Clerical Exam.
