Project Engineer – Mechanical Commissioning

Overview
We are seeking a Project Engineer – Mechanical Commissioning to support mission-critical projects, primarily within data center environments.
This is a hands-on role for a motivated and detail-oriented engineer with experience in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting complex mechanical systems. You’ll work closely with project teams to ensure systems are designed, installed, and operating to meet performance requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Commission mechanical, plumbing, and fire/life safety systems, including associated controls
- Support commissioning efforts from design through occupancy phases
- Review system designs for alignment with project and client requirements
- Perform functional testing, troubleshooting, and system validation
- Attend and document factory acceptance testing (FAT)
- Maintain detailed documentation of field activities, results, and observations
- Coordinate with project teams to execute commissioning activities
- Provide technical recommendations based on system performance
- Assist in preparing commissioning plans, schedules, and reports
- Support and mentor junior engineers as needed
Systems & Equipment Exposure
Experience with some or all of the following is :
- Chillers (air-cooled & water-cooled), cooling towers
- CRAC units, AHUs, and HVAC systems
- Boilers, pumps, and hydronic systems
- Fuel systems, generators, and turbines
- Fire protection systems (pre-action, fire pumps, alarms, VESDA)
- Variable frequency drives (VFDs), VRV/VRF systems
- Building management systems (BMS), PLC/DDC controls
- Leak detection, heat trace, and process water systems
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering OR equivalent hands-on experience
- 2–4+ years of experience in commissioning or related mechanical systems work
- Experience in mission-critical environments (data centers strongly )
- Strong understanding of mechanical system design, testing, and troubleshooting
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Experience
- Familiarity with ASHRAE or BCxA commissioning guidelines
- Experience with controls, programming, or automation systems
- Working knowledge of BMS and/or EPMS systems
- PE license or commissioning certification (a plus, not required)
Work Environment
- Travel required: ~50–75% nationwide (depending on project assignment)
- Field-based role with hands-on commissioning responsibilities
