Senior Electrical Design Engineer

Job DescriptionJob Description

Position Overview - Travel Required

VantagePoint Alliance (VPA) is supporting multiple industrial and power-sector clients seeking experienced Electrical Design Engineers to lead development of facility power infrastructure from utility interconnection through substations, transformers, switchgear, distribution systems, and final connections to plant equipment, auxiliary systems, and facility lighting.

This role is responsible for establishing and coordinating the plant electrical architecture across all project phases—from early concept development through detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, and startup. The position requires strong ownership of single-line diagrams and overall power distribution strategy supporting safe, reliable, and maintainable plant operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead development of electrical system design from utility interconnect through high-voltage, medium-voltage, and low-voltage distribution systems to end-use equipment.
  • Develop and maintain electrical single-line diagrams (SLDs) defining plant-wide power architecture.
  • Support electrical scope during FEL / conceptual design, detailed engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Specify and coordinate design of:
    • Substations
    • Transformers
    • Switchgear (HV/MV/LV)
    • Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
    • VFD systems
    • Protective relaying and metering
    • UPS and backup power systems
    • Harmonic filters and power quality equipment
    • Facility lighting and auxiliary systems
  • Interface with utilities on grid interconnection requirements and protection coordination.
  • Coordinate electrical scope with mechanical, controls, instrumentation, and process engineering teams.
  • Review vendor packages, equipment specifications, and construction deliverables.
  • Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable industry codes and standards including IEEE, NEC, NFPA, and API where applicable.
  • Provide technical leadership to EPC partners, consultants, and internal engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 10–20+ years of experience in industrial, utility, power , or process plant electrical design.
  • Demonstrated experience developing plant electrical systems from utility interface through distribution to connected loads.
  • Experience preparing and coordinating single-line diagrams for facility power systems.
  • Strong background in medium-voltage and low-voltage power distribution design.
  • Experience specifying and integrating:
    • Substations
    • Transformers
    • Switchgear
    • MCCs
    • Motors and drives
    • Protective relaying systems
  • Familiarity with electrical studies such as:
    • Load flow
    • Short circuit
    • Arc flash
    • Coordination
    • Harmonic analysis
  • Experience working with EPC contractors, Owner’s Engineers, or operating facilities.
  • Working knowledge of commissioning and startup practices.

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience supporting utility interconnection studies or coordination.
  • Background in power , petrochemical, chemical processing, hydrogen, renewables, or heavy industrial facilities.
  • Experience with modular plant or balance-of-plant electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, or similar analysis software.

Typical Project Environments

Projects may include:

  • Power facilities
  • Chemical and petrochemical plants
  • Hydrogen and electrochemical processing facilities
  • Industrial manufacturing plants
  • Data centers and mission-critical infrastructure
  • Utility-connected energy facilities
  • Renewable and grid-support infrastructure

Why This Role Matters

This position plays a critical role in defining the electrical backbone of complex facilities by translating utility power into safe, reliable plant-wide distribution systems supporting everything from major rotating equipment to instrumentation loads and facility lighting through coordinated single-line architecture.
