Position: Senior Mechanical Application Development Engineer – High Speed Connectors
Location: Santa Clara, CA
Amphenol High Speed Products Group is the market leader for high-speed, high-bandwidth electrical connectors for the Telecom/Datacom market (Mobile Networks, Storage, Servers, Routers, Switches, etc.). Our products enable the electronics revolution and remain a key enabler for all major Tier 1 OEMs globally. Our global headquarters are in Nashua, NH, and we have design, sales and manufacturing locations globally.
The Senior Mechanical Application Development Engineer will participate in the design and development of unique and/or proprietary high-speed interconnects, including thermal solutions, that will integrate into the customer’s system. These products are developed in response to specific customer application needs.
Role & Responsibilities
- Customer Engagement & Product Selection:
- Work closely with customers to ensure they select the best solutions from the Amphenol portfolio for their application.
- Provide technical guidance on product selection, system architecture, and integration best practices.
- Push back on customer design decisions when necessary to maintain optimal performance.
- Share lessons learned, highlighting potential problem areas and best practices.
- Custom Design & Engineering Documentation:
- Design custom configurations if needed and document designs with detailed engineering drawings.
- Develop and validate mockup systems to demonstrate the best architecture.
- System Architecture:
- Help customers architect their applications for optimal hardware layout.
- Develop tools for installation and removal of components.
- Technical Support & Knowledge Sharing:
- Provide on-site support at customer and ODM locations during early build phases.
- Conduct technical presentations and training sessions to coach customers on correct product usage.
- Provide technical support to Sales and marketing personnel, including technical training, presentations and customer visits.
- Stay abreast of technological developments in the connector and interconnection industries.
- Apply patent requests when applicable to protect intellectual property.
- Project Management & Collaboration:
- Participate in multiple weekly conference calls with customers, ODMs, and internal teams throughout the development process (typically lasting a few months per project).
- Manage 4-6 concurrent projects, ensuring timely support and execution.
- Draw on the global engineering capabilities of other divisions for collaborative high-speed connector product development initiatives to serve a total solution to the customer.
- Foster relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely completion of projects on time and within budget.
- Report regular project updates.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Industry experience in the design and development of high-speed connectors, cable assemblies, and interconnect systems is strongly .
- Minimum of 5-7 years of industry experience in product development and/or mechanical design, or a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering () with equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical design and creation of detailed engineering documentation. (Must Have)
- Proven ability to develop and deliver clear, compelling technical presentations to customers and internal stakeholders. (Must Have)
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to successfully manage multiple concurrent projects. (Must Have)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to challenge and push back on suboptimal design decisions while maintaining productive customer relationships. (Must Have)
- Strong technical problem-solving capabilities and the confidence to engage in highly technical discussions with customers and cross-functional teams.
- Advanced analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills. (Must Have)
- Ability to understand differing technical viewpoints on complex issues and effectively negotiate and integrate multiple perspectives.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or a comparable CAD platform. ()
- Willingness to travel to customer and ODM sites; travel requirements will vary based on customer program needs. (Must Have)
The base salary range for this position based in Santa Clara, CA is $100,750 – $168,870 USD annually. In determining rate of pay, Amphenol considers a variety of nondiscriminatory factors, including but not limited to geographic location, relevant industry experience, qualifications, skills, and education. It would be rare for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for a given role. Base salary is one facet of Amphenol’s total rewards package which includes participation in our comprehensive benefits program with medical, dental, and vision benefits effective day 1, vacation, sick leave, personal days, paid holidays, life insurance, short/long term , and matching 401K. Our Mechanical Application Development Engineers are also eligible to participate in an annual incentive bonus program.
