Job Summary:
The Senior Project Manager (SPM) is responsible for the strategic execution of high-complexity, large-scale electrical switchgear manufacturing and construction projects. This role serves as the primary bridge between technical engineering and field-level execution, overseeing the entire project lifecycle from pre-construction submittals through factory testing (FT) and warranty. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in power distribution systems, a "command and control" presence for large-sum contracts, and the ability to mentor junior project managers.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Project Leadership & Execution:
- Lead the execution of multi-million dollar custom switchgear orders, ensuring seamless integration between Engineering, Production, and Field Construction.
- Translate complex technical specifications and electrical one-lines into actionable production schedules and resource plans.
- Drive New Product Introduction (NPI) and complex custom-engineered-to-order (ETO) projects, ensuring manufacturing readiness for new technologies.
Financial & Contractual Stewardship:
- Own the project P proactively manage project margins through aggressive cost-to-complete tracking and procurement strategies.
- Expertly manage Change Orders and scope creep, ensuring all technical deviations are documented, priced, and approved to protect company profitability.
- Navigate complex construction contracts, including liquidated damages (LDs), insurance requirements, and site-specific safety protocols.
Technical Monitoring & Quality Control:
- Oversee Factory Testing (FT) schedules and coordinate with client engineers to ensure 100% compliance with utility or industrial standards.
- Interface with Supply Chain to mitigate risks related to long-lead electrical components (e.g., breakers, relays, transformers).
- Utilize ERP/MRP systems to maintain real-time visibility into the Bill of Materials (BOM) and production bottlenecks.
Stakeholder Management & Field Coordination:
- Act as the authoritative lead for high-profile clients, Electrical Contractors, and Engineering Firms (A&E).
- Coordinate factory-to-site logistics, including offloading requirements and field service support for equipment startup and commissioning.
- Resolve high-level conflicts between production constraints and customer "need-by" dates.
Process Excellence & Mentorship:
- Standardize project management frameworks (e.g., Stage-Gate processes) to improve "Speed to Market" and fulfillment efficiency.
- Mentor and coach junior PMs and Project Coordinators to elevate the overall competency of the Operations department.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum 10+ years of progressive project management experience, with at least 5 years specifically within electrical switchgear manufacturing, power distribution, or heavy electrical construction.
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Construction Management is highly .
- Certification: PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is .
- Technical Depth: Deep understanding of NEMA/IEEE standards, UL listings, and the Electrical Code (NEC).
- Proven Track Record: Experience managing "critical path" projects for data centers, utilities, or large-scale industrial plants.
Core Competencies:
- Technical Acumen: Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and complex construction drawings.
- Risk Mitigation: Advanced ability to identify "long-pole" items in the supply chain and develop contingency plans.
- Negotiation: Proven ability to negotiate contract terms and change orders with sophisticated general contractors and owners.
- Systems Proficiency: Expert level use of ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft Dynamics) and advanced scheduling software (e.g., MS Project or Primavera P6).
- Leadership: A "hands-on" leader who can influence both shop-floor personnel and C-suite executive.
