Position Summary
The Senior Field Superintendent will directly supervise and coordinate construction activities for Applied Digital’s data center projects and report to the EVP of Development and Construction. This role is critical in ensuring project success by monitoring and facilitating collaboration among Applied Digital, contractors, subcontractors, third-party vendors, and regulatory bodies. The position requires a unique blend of technical expertise, communication skills, and project management acumen.
Projects include but are not limited to:
- Development of ground-up data center buildings.
- Redevelopment or upgrade of existing properties to state-of-the-art data centers.
- Expansion of data centers and critical infrastructure within existing facilities or property.
- Large customer fit-outs and retrofits to accommodate occupancy and deployment needs.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S):
- Collaborate with Applied Digital on-site EH&S to establish and sustain health, safety, and security controls in accordance with corporate objectives.
Procurement:
- Ensure the GC properly manages site logistics for owner-furnished equipment (OFCI).
- Inspect and check-in all Applied Digital-furnished equipment and materials upon arrival.
Construction Management:
- Maintain a consistent on-site presence (Mon–Fri, 7AM–5PM, with flexibility for evenings/weekends as needed).
- Participate in GC-led meetings including OAC, subcontractor coordination, pull planning, design, BIM/VDC, RFI/submittal reviews.
- Provide technical construction SME support, visual inspections, and quality control for OFCI and CFCI equipment.
- Track contractor progress, monitor schedules, and communicate delays or risks.
- Prepare regular project reports covering plan vs. actual, variances, risks, and mitigation measures.
Quality Control:
- Manage on-site job photography.
- Ensure the GC’s Quality Control Plan aligns with Applied Digital specifications.
- Oversee QA/QC processes to close punch list items and expedite turnover to Operations.
- Monitor site cleanliness and industry best practices for data center construction.
Site Security:
- Ensure GC adherence to the agreed-upon site-specific security plan.
Billing & Change Management:
- Assist with budget monitoring, review contractor/vendor pay applications, and evaluate change orders.
Commissioning & Closeout:
- Support engineering teams during commissioning.
- Coordinate turnover packages for completeness and accuracy.
Other Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate Applied Digital leadership behaviors be proactive, led by example, and energize others.
- Manage special projects, support sales or finance, and facilitate interdepartmental coordination.
- Serve as the site logistics lead and manage site visits/tours.
- Act as Applied Digital’s construction representative with local utilities and third-party contractors.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent listening, communication, and presentation skills.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
- Proven leadership and team-building skills.
- Deep understanding of building processes, systems, cost estimating, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
- 5+ years in commercial or industrial construction (preferably).
- Post-secondary education is .
- OSHA 30 certified or willing to achieve certification.
- Commitment to safety and quality.
- Ability to work independently with a strong work ethic and “can-do” attitude.
- Understanding of CPM schedule logic.
Physical Requirements
Able to remain in a seated position for an extended period and to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. (office manuals, case notebooks, case files, case materials, standard boxes, report binders, etc.) as needed.
Working Conditions by Location:
Remote: The Company agrees that Employee may work from home provided employee is in good standing, has a continuous secured internet connection, necessary equipment, and is accessible by MS Teams, phone, fax, and email during business hours. (See Telework policy.)
Office Environment: Business office hours, with work hours necessary to satisfactorily perform job functions. Some overtime may be required to accomplish timely work demands and meet the company’s professional commitments. Overtime hours worked are paid to nonexempt employees at one and a half times their hourly pay rate.
Site Location: We are a 24-hour facility. Work hours (shifts) are assigned as necessary to satisfactorily perform job functions, ensure compliance, and support efficient company operations. Some positions require work at irregular hours (nights/weekends), overtime, alternating shifts, and working in challenging conditions (heat/cold, hazardous environments, loud worksites). Overtime hours worked are paid to nonexempt employees at one and a half times their hourly pay rate.
