Purpose of the role

This is a greenfield leadership hire. The Vice President of Data Center Engineering will be the founding leader of the company's in-house engineering and design function, building the team, integrity of all data center development — from conceptual design through commissioning and handoff.

The ideal candidate brings deep domain expertise in a primary engineering discipline (electrical or mechanical) with sufficient breadth to lead across the full scope of data center infrastructure. They will be expected to build a team of 3–5 engineers within the first 12–18 months, establishing the engineering function as a core pillar of the development organization.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Strategy & Standards

  • Define and own the company's data center engineering strategy, design standards, and technical specifications across all development programs.
  • Establish engineering governance including design review processes, quality gates, and documentation standards for both powered-shell and turnkey build-to-suit delivery models.
  • Drive innovation in energy efficiency, sustainability, and emerging technologies including AI/HPC readiness, liquid cooling, and modular construction methods.
  • Partner with executive leadership on capital planning, infrastructure investment decisions, and evaluation of development strategies.

Design & Engineering Delivery

  • Lead end-to-end engineering and design for new builds, expansions, and retrofits — owning scope from conceptual and schematic design through construction documents.
  • Manage and direct external engineering consultants, ensuring design deliverables meet company standards, project specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Maintain design standards aligned with Tier III/Tier IV (or equivalent) reliability targets for power, cooling, and structural systems.
  • Approve major design decisions and drive vendor/equipment selection for critical infrastructure systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable building codes, safety regulations, environmental standards, and industry best practices.
  • In coordination with the Permitting lead, develop and execute comprehensive permitting strategies, regulatory timelines, and compliance roadmaps.
  • Partner with the SVP of Power to ensure utility procurement and interconnection align with project requirements and are fit for purpose.

Construction Support & Commissioning

  • Provide engineering support through construction, including RFI resolution, design clarifications, submittal review, and field engineering coordination.
  • Work with project management and general contractors to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to specification.
  • Oversee commissioning processes, including management of the Commissioning Authority (CxA) in coordination with the Project Manager and the VP of HPC Operations, ensuring systems are tested, validated, and handed off to operations.
  • Implement risk identification and mitigation strategies throughout the development lifecycle.

Operational Engineering Interface

  • Establish reliability and performance engineering standards in partnership with operations leadership, including KPIs for uptime, MTBF, MTTR, PUE, and WUE.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for major infrastructure events and feed lessons learned back into design standards.
  • Drive predictive maintenance frameworks and asset lifecycle management programs that inform future design decisions.

Team Building

  • Recruit, hire, and develop a high-performing engineering team of 3–5 professionals within the first 12–18 months.
  • Define the organizational structure, role profiles, and capability roadmap for the engineering function.
  • Establish a culture of engineering rigor, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Required Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Master's degree .
  • 15+ years of progressive engineering experience in data center or mission-critical facility environments, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
  • Deep domain expertise in a primary discipline (electrical power systems or mechanical/cooling systems) with demonstrated ability to lead across the full MEP scope.
  • Proven track record leading engineering and design for large-scale data center programs (hyperscale, enterprise, or colocation) — including multi-hundred-million-dollar delivery programs.
  • Experience managing external engineering consultants and integrating their output into a cohesive delivery program.
  • Strong command of data center reliability standards, applicable codes (NEC, NFPA, ASHRAE, IMC), and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with capacity planning across power, cooling, and space for compute-dense environments.

Qualifications
