Commissioning Electrician (Data Center/Mission Critical)
Location: Chicago, IL
Job Type: 12-Month W2 Contract (Potential Extension)
Schedule: Onsite | Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM–5:00 PM
Compensation: $50–$60/hour DOE
About the Opportunity
Russell Tobin is supporting a leading global technology and cloud infrastructure organization in the hiring of a Commissioning Electrician to support large-scale data center commissioning operations. This role is ideal for experienced electrical professionals with a strong background in mission-critical environments who are passionate about technical excellence, training, and operational reliability.
You’ll join a highly collaborative commissioning team responsible for accelerating vendor onboarding and ensuring the successful execution of electrical systems commissioning across expanding data center operations.
What You’ll Do
Primary Responsibilities
- Instruct and certify commissioning vendors on the proper execution of functional testing scripts for electrical data center equipment
- Support commissioning activities involving:

- Medium and low voltage power systems
- UPS systems
- Generators
- Switchgear
- PDUs
- Electrical Power Monitoring Systems (EPMS)
- Conduct hands-on field training and competency evaluations for vendor technicians
- Assess vendor performance against established standards and issue certifications upon successful completion
- Identify technical skill gaps and implement corrective action plans
- Maintain accurate records of certifications, training completions, and evaluation outcomes
- Audit onsite commissioning activities to ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards
Secondary Responsibilities
- Assist with the growth and maintenance of an accelerated vendor training program
- Support the development and delivery of training materials, assessments, and hands-on exercises
- Provide subject matter expertise for curriculum updates and process improvements
- Collaborate closely with internal commissioning and learning & development teams
Required Qualifications
- Active Journeyman Electrician License
- 5+ years of experience commissioning electrical systems in data centers or other mission-critical facilities
- Strong knowledge of medium and low voltage power distribution systems
- Experience executing functional testing scripts for electrical infrastructure equipment
- Ability to read and interpret:

- Single-line diagrams
- Specifications
- Sequences of operation
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
- Experience working in critical operations or high-reliability environments
Qualifications
- Previous experience in training, instruction, mentorship, or technical coaching
- Familiarity with commissioning documentation such as test plans, scripts, and completion reports
- OSHA 30 certification
- Experience supporting large-scale commissioning programs with multiple vendors
- Familiarity with BMS or EPMS platforms
