Data Center Field Installations Technician (L1)

Location: Reno, NV (Onsite – Shift Work)
Level: Entry-Level (L1)

Role Summary

The Data Center Field Installations Technician (L1) is an entry-level hands-on technical role responsible for executing standardized installation activities within a data center environment.

This role focuses primarily on structured cabling and cable pulling, along with basic rack and stack tasks and repeatable installation work such as labeling, scanning inventory, and component placement.

Technicians follow defined procedures, checklists, and engineering documentation to ensure consistent, high-quality deployments with minimal rework.

This is a physically active role requiring attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and willingness to learn. Candidates with military backgrounds or early-career technical experience are highly valued.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform rack assembly and preparation (rail kits, PDUs, cable management, labeling)
  • Rack and stack servers, storage, and network equipment per design specifications
  • Perform structured cabling (Cat5/Cat6, copper, coax, and fiber where applicable)
  • Pull, route, dress, and label cables to data center standards
  • Connect A/B power feeds following redundancy requirements
  • Assist with airflow and cooling setup:
    • Install blanking panels and airflow management components (DX environments)
    • Support cable routing to optimize airflow
  • Assist with direct-to-chip (D2C) liquid cooling tasks under supervision (hose routing, quick disconnects)
  • Follow Method of Procedures (MOPs), diagrams, and installation documentation
  • Conduct basic quality checks and report issues or discrepancies
  • Maintain clean, organized racks and work areas
  • Perform repeatable operational tasks such as inventory scanning, labeling, and component positioning

Health & Safety Responsibilities

  • Follow all data center safety policies, permits, and procedures
  • Use required PPE (gloves, safety shoes, eye protection, etc.)
  • Follow safe manual handling practices for lifting and equipment installation
  • Adhere to electrical safety standards (under supervision)
  • Follow safety protocols for liquid cooling systems (leak awareness and reporting)
  • Maintain housekeeping standards to prevent hazards (cable management, debris removal)
  • Immediately report hazards, near misses, and incidents

Requirements (L1)

  • 5–6 months minimum structured cabling experience (required)
  • Hands-on experience with Cat5/Cat6, copper, and coax cabling
  • Experience in structured cabling environments (data center or central office )
  • Own basic cabling tools (e.g., crimping tool )
  • Basic understanding of rack infrastructure (PDUs, rails, cable management)
  • Exposure to data center environments is a plus
  • Basic understanding of airflow concepts (DX or liquid cooling exposure is a bonus)
  • Ability to follow SOPs, technical documentation, and MOPs
  • Strong attention to detail and positive attitude
  • Physically able to lift, stand for long periods, and work in confined rack spaces
  • Military background or trade school experience is a plus
