Overview:
Technicians will perform central-office testing of fiber optic links using industry standard test equipment and document results for customer acceptance and troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform end-to-end fiber testing on new and existing fiber plant using power meters, OLTS, OTDR, and visual fault locator/red light tools.
- Conduct optical continuity, insertion loss, and reflectance testing to verify compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
- Interpret OTDR traces and OLTS results to identify, locate, and document faults, excessive loss, macro-bends, or other impairments.
- Complete test reports, labeling, and as-built documentation accurately and on time, using company templates or customer portals.
- Work closely with fiber construction/splicing crews to coordinate test windows, identify issues in the field, and verify remediation.
- Inspect, clean, and maintain fiber connectors, jumpers, and test leads using appropriate fiber inspection and cleaning tools.
- Follow safety procedures, traffic control requirements, and site access rules for outside plan (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) environments.
- Protect and maintain test equipment (OTDR, OLTS, power meters, VFL, laptops/tablets) and ensure calibration/firmware is current.
Required Skills & Experience:
- 1 to 3+ years of hands-on in fiber optic testing, technician or splicer/tester roles (OSP/ISP).
- Proficient with power meters, OLTS, OTDR & visual fault locator/red light.
- Read and work from fiber plans, splice docs, and network design prints.
- Strong understanding of single-mode fiber, basic fiber loss budgets, connector types, and industry best practices for cleaning & handling.
- Comfortable working in the field in various weather conditions and on different shifts.
- Valid DL and reliable transportation to job sites in the great Columbus area.
Qualifications:
- Experience supporting large scale FTTx, Backbone, or data center fiber deployments.
- Certifications - FOA CFOT, ETA fiber certifications, or OEM-specific OTDR/OLTS training.
- Experience working under production-based metrics (test points per day, route completions, etc.)
